Desktop or Laptop: Confused what is best for you?

You have decided it’s now time to buy a fresh brand new system or to upgrade the old system lying around at your home. You have also set your budget. You started researching offline and online market prices. You came to know that you have great options in your budget and can go either for a new Desktop computer or a powerful Laptop computer. But now you can’t decide which one to go for?Back in 2008, laptop sales passed desktops for the first time, and portable devices have entrenched themselves even further as their power increased and prices dropped. Desktops have by no means disappeared, though. Like everything else in computing, the right choice depends on how you’re going to use the device.

You can use below checklist before deciding:

  • Determine which applications and features you routinely use. Are any of them highly specialized in terms of graphics, computation, or input devices?
  • Think about how often you will need to move the computer or carry it around.
  • Test what screen sizes and keyboards feel comfortable for you.
  • Consider whether your future needs might require upgrades and additions to the computer.

Now we will give you a Pros and Cons of Desktop computers and Laptop computers:

Desktop Computers

Pros

Cons

The processors used in desktops are quite powerful because of their large size.

Desktops are large in size. It is possible to take it from one place to another but they are mostly designed to be used in a single location and not moved around much, if at all.

These are capable of using high powered graphics cards which have high power requirements and require better heat dissipation. Desktops can use multiple video cards at the same time. Therefore gaming experience on desktop is always better than laptops.

Desktop requires more space to set up.

Different components of desktops can be found very easily in the market with a large range of price suitable for all kinds of budget.

If you are assembling a desktop by yourself, it requires a significant amount of knowledge about systems and components. Once you have built it, you need to install OS, drivers and set up different configurations before actually starting using it. Well it’s not difficult but still more time taking to set up a laptop for work.

A powerful PC can start somewhere around INR 35000 to INR 40000.

Desktop computers require separate peripherals such as monitors, keyboard, mouse, UPS etc.

You can have a variety of peripherals to choose from. You can use a full size keyboard including a number pad. You can use a high frame rate monitor with 1 ms response rate coupled with a gaming mouse for precision.

Power consumption of desktops are higher than a laptop. It’s because of the larger size components used. Desktops used without an UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) could result in data loss in event of power loss.

Monitor size can be 19 inch or even larger. They can be hooked to a TV.

Upgrading desktop components are much easier since older ones can be easily swapped individually with the latest ones.

They can be easily repaired since most of the hardware can be easily found online or offline.

Desktops can have multiple internal drives installed.

Number and variety of ports are more than laptops both installed at back and front side of cabinet.

Laptop Computers

Pros

Cons

These days laptop processors are very close to desktop ones, but are still limited when compared to desktop processors.

Gaming laptops can have an equal performance to desktop ones, but have much higher price.

Portability is the highest selling point for laptops. They were primarily designed to be taken from place to place.

Laptops can have a wide variety of components available, but they are limited than desktops.

There is no need for external peripherals such as monitors, keyboards, mouse, UPS etc.

They usually have room for only one internal drive. An upgrade in internal storage requires the drive to be completely removed.

Laptop requires lower power to operate. They have a built-in battery which will automatically take over your system power requirement in case of power failure. Thus no work will be lost.

To get a powerful laptop with high speed processors, better graphics, more storage price can start somewhere from INR 50000 or more depending upon the brand.

Laptops are plug-and-play types of device. Just take it out of the box, plug it in and press the power button. There is no need to install additional softwares, OS, drivers etc.

Laptops with smaller screen size have smaller keyboards and doesn’t have a number pad on the right side. Larger laptops with large screen size may include number pad but are bulkier and heavier.

Laptop can also connect to an external display and can support any size of monitor or projector.

The biggest concern when buying a laptop is about its upgradeability. Memory and hard drive are the only components that can be upgraded. Processors can also be upgraded but doing so may result in a non-functioning of a device due to its non-compatibility with other system components.

Laptop has limited physical space to accommodate all system components. This limits the graphics card capability. Graphic intensive work can cause system overheating and the heat reduction/dissipation is also limited by the space in the laptop case.

Repairing a laptop by yourself is a nightmare. There are a lot of screws to untight. Every laptop model has different components and wire setup inside. For a replacement part you need to call the computer manufacturer. Best is to leave it for professionals and bear extra bucks of repairing cost.

In the end, the final decision depends on what your needs are. Above comparison can highlight that desktop computers are the best, but if you are always on the go, then laptop is the best option for you.
