India bans 59 Chinese Apps including TikTok, Shareit, WeChat

As per article published in Press Information Bureau of India,

“The Ministry of Information Technology, invoking its power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009 and in view of the emergent nature of threats has decided to block 59 apps ( see Appendix) since in view of information available they are engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, Ministry of Home Affairs has also sent an exhaustive recommendation for blocking these malicious apps. This Ministry has also received many representations raising concerns from citizens regarding security of data and risk to privacy relating to operation of certain apps.”

This move by Indian Government is welcomed across the entire country since China has also blocked Indian Newspapers and Websites. These Indian websites are even not accessible through VPN, since China has implemented technologically advanced firewall.

When and how this ban is going to be effective is yet to be determined. But we can assume that these apps will slowly disappear from Play Store or Apple Store for users in India. Those who currently have these apps in their mobile phones will continue to work. But those apps which require active internet connection such as TikTok, UC Browser etc. are going to stop working while apps such as Cam Scanner will continue to work since such apps work offline.

However if ban exists and Indian users somehow continue to use these banned apps, they are not going to receive app updates leaving those smartphones widely vulnerable to cyber attacks.

Meanwhile Indian users can find other alternatives for these apps as there are a lot of them in app stores.

Below is the list of 59 Apps which have been decided to block by Indian government:
