Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 5 brings 0 to 50% in just 5 minutes for phones

Qualcomm on Monday announced Quick Charge 5, the fastest commercial charging technology for Android devices. The main highlight on QC5 will be it supports more than 100W charging power in a smartphone and is capable of charging devices from 0 to 50 % battery power in just 5 minutes. It is 70% more efficient or 4 times faster compared to Quick Charge 4, and offers 10 times the power delivery of Quick Charge 1, which was launched back in 2013.

Quick Charge 5 is backwards compatible with version 2.0, 3.0, 4, and 4+, with the chart below explaining the permutations. Qualcomm notes how it also takes advantage of both USB-PD and Type-C. These QC5 charging bricks will also work with laptops and other form factors.

There is support for 1SnP and 2SnP batteries and 20 volts of power delivery. Company has also released its next generation premium tier power management ICs (PMIC), SMB1396 and SMB1398 for optimal Quick Charge 5 performance.

It incorporates 12 separate voltage, current and temperature protections, including USB-input overvoltage protection at 25V and external power controls beyond 30V. It also runs 10 degrees Celsius cooler than Quick Charge 4.

Availability

Quick Charge 5 is currently sampling with customers and is expected to appear in commercial devices in Q3 2020. Quick Charge 5 is supported on Snapdragon 865, 865 Plus, and future premium- and high-tier Snapdragon mobile platforms.
