Samsung on Sunday has announced that they have commenced mass production of the industry’s first 16GB LPDDR5 mobile DRAM. The production has started at Samsung’s second production line in Pyeongtaek, Korea plant. Built on the company’s 3rd-Gen 10nm-class (1z) process, the new 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM will offer faster data transfer and also pack more functionality into a slim design compared to its predecessor. Samsung will also expand the use of its LPDDR5 offerings into automotive applications, offering an extended temperature range to meet strict safety and reliability standards in extreme environments.

- The new LPDDR5 (at 6400 Mb/s) is about 16% faster than the 12GB LPDDR5 (5500 Mb/s). The new LPDDR5 is capable of transferring about 10 5GB -sized full HD movies, or 51.2GB of data, in one second.
- The new LPDDR5 package is 30% thinner than its predecessor, thanks to the 1z process. The 16GB LPDDR5 can build a 16GB package with only eight chips. Whereas the older 1y based predecessor required combining twelve chips (eight 12Gb chips and four 8Gb chips) to make a 16GB RAM package.
