Windows users have been using Internet Explorer version 11 since 2013. Now Microsoft has shared its plan that by the end of August 2021, they will stop support for legacy Internet Explorer. Company will be withdrawing support for the browser in a phased manner.
- Beginning November 30, 2020, the Microsoft Teams web app will no longer support IE 11.
- Beginning August 17, 2021, the remaining Microsoft 365 apps and services will no longer support IE 11.
After the above dates, customers will have a degraded experience or will be unable to connect to Microsoft 365 apps and services on IE 11.
Meanwhile to minimize the impact of these transitions, Microsoft is recommending its customer to install the new Microsoft Edge. The new Microsoft Edge includes Internet Explorer mode that will bridge the gap between modern and legacy apps. So users have to rely temporarily on a two-browser workaround.
Microsoft have also announced that they will be ending support for 2 years old Microsoft Edge legacy desktop app on March 9, 2021.
- After March 9, 2021, the Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop app will not receive new security updates.
Microsoft has already released a whole new version of Microsoft Edge in January 2020, which is built on the Chromium open source engine (same as Google Chrome). All the new windows devices and future windows feature updates (starting with Windows 10, version 20H2) will contain the new Microsoft Edge.
