Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 launched with improved hinge and flexible display

 

Samsung on Tuesday has officially announced the launch of its flagship foldable smartphone: The Galaxy Z Fold 2. Initially Galaxy Z Fold 2 was introduced on August 5th together with Samsung Galaxy Note 20/Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy Buds Live, Galaxy Tab S7/S7+ and Galaxy Watch 3, but Samsung has now revealed full specifications along with other features, price and availability in its Galaxy Unpacked Part 2 virtual event.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 features a bigger, flexible display. The display can be folded in half and comes with an Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) protection. Compared to its last year sibling Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 smartphone has a full 6.2 inch edge-to-edge cover screen.

Price and availability

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 price in the US is set at $1,999 (approx INR 1,46,200). The price for the Indian market is yet to be announced. The Phone will be offered in Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze color options. Shipping will start on September 18 and pre-ordering has already begun today.

Samsung has also launched the Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne Edition that will be available starting September 25 in select countries.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne Edition costs $3,299 (approx INR 2,41,220)  which and the package will include Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Buds Live too. There are also accessories like additional watch bands and a case for the handset. Only 5,000 units of this special edition will be made available globally.

Customers also have an option to color customize the hinge from selection of Metallic Silver, Metallic Red, Metallic Blue and Metallic Gold options. This can be done via an online tool on Samsung.com before making the purchase.

Specifications

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 when unfolded uncovers a big 7.6 inch QXGA Dynamic AMOLED display with 2208×1768 pixels resolution. The cover screen is a 6.2 inch Super AMOLED Infinity Flex Display with 816×2260 pixels resolution. It comes with 12GB of RAM and two internal storage options – 512GB and 256GB. It is powered by the latest Snapdragon 865 plus SoC processor. The smartphone packs a 4500mAh battery and supports fast charging, wireless charging and Wireless PowerShare (reverse wireless charging).

Coming to the camera capabilities, Galaxy Z Fold 2 comes with the triple rear camera setup housing a 12MP primary sensor with OIS, 12 MP ultra-wide-angle lens and 1 12MP telephoto lens. There are two other 12MP selfie cameras on both cover screen as well as main display with an f/2.2 aperture.

The hinge mechanism has also been re-engineered with Samsung claiming that they have included a dedicated “sweeper” to help clean dust and debris out using elastic fibers. The phone can also be opened and fixed at multiple folding angles using the new CAM mechanism.
